South Kalgoorlie Primary School buzzes with activity for 120-year milestone celebrations

The Goldfields primary school community with “a lot of heart” was buzzing with activity as it celebrated the milestone of educating children for 120 years. South Kalgoorlie Primary School has grown since 1904 when it opened its doors to 118 enrolled students, with more than 320 children currently attending the school. To mark the milestone, families were invited to join students at the school’s annual fundraising enterprise day, a celebratory sausage sizzle lunch and a special assembly. Principal Katherine Grant said it was exciting to have the school community take part in the celebrations. “Today is about bringing in the school community, encouraging the community to be part of the school is vital,” she said. “Our community loves days like this, they love sports carnivals, they love any days that they’re invited in to be part of the fun, and they’ll enjoy having lunch with the kids today.” Ms Grant has been at the helm of the Lionel Street school for the past 14 years, making her the longest-serving principal in the school’s history. She said she felt privileged to have had the opportunity to contribute to such a remarkable community school over the years. “It’s a very special place, it’s a school with a lot of heart and some really special children,” she said. “It’s really beautiful because it’s an integral part of the South Kalgoorlie community, and it always has been. “We have some families that are generational — they come back and back, and some families will move into the area just to come to this school. “It is a really special place to be, I feel honoured to have been the principal here for so long.”
