A unique stage performance using contemporary dance to depict the fears of climate change is set to make its way to the Lower South West as part of a Statewide tour next year.

Award-winning choreographer and dancer Annette Carmichael is set to bring her The Stars Descend show to Northcliffe in 2023, which will be used to show the realities of the global crisis and urge audiences to join the fight.

Set to be held at Canterbury Farm in Northcliffe, the performance will mark one of five across the State as part of Carmichael’s Distributed 15 project, which also incorporates ecological change into workshops.

Carmichael said the idea came about in response to feeling like people, including herself, were starting to fear climate change.

Through her work with Gondwana Link, Carmichael saw an opportunity to give hope to the ability to preserve and restore native habitats through contemporary dance.

“Dance is a great way of holding emotion,” she said.

“Sometimes you don’t have to put things into words to convey a message.”

Chrissie Parrott, who received an Order of Australia for services to dance, will choreograph the Northcliffe performance and said she was excited about the concept.

“The Northcliffe performance has such a positive theme and will highlight the beauty of the land,” Parrott said.

“It will be located at a beautiful natural outdoor location that has a sort of theatrical feel about it.”

Parrott said it was not important whether people had danced before, everyone was welcome to participate.

Carmichael said the project had to be big to reflect the distributed responsibility across many people to care for the natural world.

Dancers of all ages and abilities have also been invited to get involved in free dance workshops at Southern Stage Performing Arts Studio in Manjimup on August 28 at 1pm.

Workshops will also be held at Northcliffe Town Hall on August 29 and 30.
