Cyclone preparations urged for Exmouth, Coral Bay, North West Cape

People in the Exmouth Gulf Coast and parts of the Gascoyne Coast need to get ready now for severe weather coming this afternoon and evening.

This includes Exmouth, Coral Bay and North West Cape.

DFES says this is unusual weather that could cause damage to homes and make travel dangerous.

A spokesman said it was important to store or weigh down loose objects around the home like outdoor furniture that could be picked up and thrown by strong winds, causing damage or injury.

“Ensure your emergency kit is complete including a battery operated radio, torch, spare batteries and first aid kit,” he said.

“Ensure pets and animals are in a safe area and move vehicles under cover.”

He advised boat owners to securely moor their boats and campers to find safe shelter away from trees, powerlines, storm water drains and streams.

“Unplug electrical appliances and avoid using landline telephone if there is lightning,” he said.

“If you are away from home contact family or friends to prepare your property.”

WA is in the unusual position of having two active cyclones off the coast, however Tropical Cyclone Odette is expected to weaken to become a low pressure system before crossing the coast near Exmouth.
