Bondi Bubbles takes home first place at Magic Millions Pinjarra races with four Geraldton owners

A horse with strong ties to Geraldton won big at the Magic Millions races last weekend, claiming the top prize for the syndicate of owners, which includes four Geraldton women. Bondi Bubbles is just three years old and began his training in August last year but the promising bay gelding has already won his past seven races. Trainer David Harrison, originally from Geraldton, took the horse to Esperance to build its confidence and racing fitness. One of 13 owners, Carol Holly, said the performance of Bondi Bubbles had been an unexpected delight. “It was just exhilarating. On Saturday when she came around the outside and started passing the other horses, we were just screaming,” she said. Jockey Paul Harvey took Bondi Bubbles across the finish line in first place in the Magic Millions 3YO Trophy at Pinjarra Park last weekend, with $137,000 in prize money, as well as a $25,000 Women In Racing bonus. The gelding finished the 1200m race in 1:11:50, beating the 14 other horses in the race. “We certainly weren’t the favourite; there were a lot of horses expected to do better than us,” Mrs Holly, who has been involved in the industry alongside her husband for 30 years, said. “We called it Bondi Bubbles because its dad is named Bondi, and bubbles because it’s a girl’s horse. Being a woman in racing, this is just so exciting.”
