Awards to celebrate champions of animal welfare

Nominations for the RSPCA WA Animal Welfare Awards are open and the search is on for WA’s unsung animal champions.

Held annually, the awards celebrate people working across the State to save animals or improve their welfare.

There are four categories for individuals and groups, plus a category for an outstanding animal who has changed someone’s life for the better.

This could be a pet that has had a significant positive impact on their owner’s life, or a therapy or service animal that has helped many people.

The five categories include the Humane Award, Youth Award, Community Action Award, RSPCA WA Volunteer of the Year Award and the Animal Award.

RSPCA WA general manager Ben Cave said the awards were about well-deserved recognition.

“Anyone can nominate, so if you volunteer for a rescue group, or know of a young person who fundraises tirelessly for animals, we want to hear about it,” he said.

Last year’s Community Action Award winner Mick Fullerton said he was honoured to be recognised for his volunteer work in rescuing and relocating reptiles with Western Reptile Removal.

“There are so many passionate and committed people devoting their time and energy to helping animals in WA. To have a platform to highlight their hard work is so important,” he said.

Nominations close on Friday, August 2, and winners will be recognised at a ceremony in October for World Animal Day.
