Port and South Hedland bring home three wins from 2025 national Tidy Town awards

Port and South Hedland have cleaned up at Keep Australia Beautiful’s national Tidy Towns awards, taking home several honours at a ceremony in Beechworth, Victoria, on May 3 despite missing out on the top gong. Port and South Hedland’s Inaugural Sustainable Living Show Day won the behaviour change and engagement award, while the Sustainability Partnership and Turtle Program won the biodiversity conservation award and local junior turtle program volunteers Kalarni and Tyler Morton won the young legends encouragement award. The town’s Great Place To Live Port and South Hedland initiative was also recognised, receiving a high recommendation title in the liveable communities award category. Late Port Hedland resident Julie Arif was also recognised at the awards, receiving a Dame Phyllis Frost local hero award special acknowledgement. Keep Australia Beautiful chief executive Val Southam commended every finalist in this year’s awards. “Year after year, the Tidy Towns Awards show the best of regional Australia — not just in sustainability, but in spirit. These winners show that when locals come together with purpose, real change happens,” she said. “These awards aren’t about ticking boxes. They spotlight the real, often quiet work that keeps communities moving forward. “This award isn’t just about one town. It’s a celebration of every community working to build a cleaner, kinder future and we’re proud to support that mission. “Regional towns are stepping up in powerful ways. They’re not just protecting their environments — they’re showing what’s possible when resilience, purpose and local leadership come together for a better future.” Six communities representing each State — Port and South Hedland for WA, Ikuntji for NT, Rye for Victoria, Parkes for NSW, Launceston for Tasmania and Kingston SE for South Australia — were shortlisted for the national title, with Launceston taking out the overall award win. The Tidy Towns awards celebrate outstanding sustainability efforts in rural and regional Australia, with more than 4000 volunteers contributing to sustainability projects, according to Keep Australia Beautiful.
