Close games, Rottnest match feature in round 9

Round nine of the Karratha Water Polo Association season featured several close matches.

In the first women’s game, the Pirates beat the Krakens 9-1.

Denise Westberg scored four goals for the Pirates, and was well-supported by Portia Angove and Nikki Roach, who scored two goals each.

Caitlin Watts scored for Krakens.

In the second game, the Barracudas and Krakens drew 4-all.

Ashleen McGovern scored two for the Krakens and Westberg, filling in for the Cudas, scored two.

In the men’s B-grade game, the Cudas returned to form to beat the Pirates 8-3.

Father-and-son duo Sean and Cooper Regan contributed three goals for the Cudas while Pirate David Clauson scored two goals.

The men’s A-grade competition featured two nail-biting games.

The Krakens drew with the Pirates 7-all in the first game.

Byron Newbold and Charlie Regan scored three goals for Krakens and Pirate Ben Biddiscombe three.

The Krakens then drew with the Cudas 5-all in game two.

Cuda recruit Jake Patten scored two goals, helped by Rhys Knight with one.

Kraken Mason Watts chipped in for his team with two goals.

On the weekend, the KWPA and Water Polo WA held the inaugural Polo on the Island event at Rottnest Island.

The Marlins men’s representative side won three out of their four games against Seda Sharks, Triton and the Claremont Dolphins A-grade teams.

The KWPA is already anticipating next year’s event which we’re sure will be bigger and better again.
