Competitors in Shark Bay gathered early on an “unexpectedly cold” Sunday morning last weekend to participate in the town’s first Denham Triathlon.

The inaugural event was organised by the Shire of Shark Bay and the Geraldton Triathlon Club after community members in the tourist town expressed an interest in hosting events in the world heritage region. A Shark Bay Shire spokesperson said the event had an enthusiastic turn out from local competitors, with 28 participants.

Locals Sharna Timmer, Tyler Harries and Duncan Heyes took out the wins in their respective categories. Participant Fiona Jol said the event highlighted Shark Bay’s great community spirit and provided a social and competitive opportunity.

“I am looking forward to next year’s event,” she said.
