Geraldton Buccaneers unveil Brandon Holloway, aim to recover with weekend’s ‘winnable’ games

The Geraldton Buccaneers welcome two sides to town for a “winnable” double-header next weekend, and are expecting a new recruit to be joining them soon after going down at home to a regional rival.

An undermanned Goldfield Giants took the win at Activewest Stadium over the weekend, downing the Buccs 70-62 despite strong efforts from veterans Aaron Ralph and Mat Wundenberg.

Buccs coach Dayle Joseph said the team would be working on “a bit of everything” in training with the hopes of turning a stop-start season around.

“We’ll do a fair bit of work at practice,” he said.

“We didn’t capitalise on that (the Giants missing players).

“We had some poor shooting.

“We played reasonably well early in the game and stuck to our structures but we couldn’t put the ball in the basket.

“There’s a bit of frustration once you get behind and we got out of our structures and then we sort of struggled all night.

“But we have two winnable games next weekend.

“Nothing’s better than coming back and having two wins to rectify a couple of tough losses.”

Tom Atkinson scored 18 points for Goldfields, Hamish Cummings scored 17 and Deng Kuany got 16.

Ralph put up 18 points and Wundenberg 15 points and 16 rebounds.

Joseph revealed after the game ex-Giant Brandon Holloway had moved to Geraldton and was expecting to suit up for the Buccs in the next few weeks as a knee injury improved. Holloway, previously Basketball WA development officer in the Goldfields, averaged eight points per game in the 2019 State Basketball League, playing 766 minutes over the season with a field goal ratio of just over 39 per cent, and shooting just over 37 per cent from outside the three-point line.

Giants coach Wayne Creek said at the start of the season Holloway, although injured, was a key part of his squad.

The Buccs will host the East Perth Eagles next Saturday and then the Joondalup Wolves on Sunday.
