SWFL women’s 2022: Busselton Magpies victorious in wet weather face off against Carey Park

The Busselton Magpies claimed victory over Carey Park in a wet-weather clash at Sir Stewart Bovell Park on Saturday night, in a mighty 8.11 (59) 0.2 (2) win.

The win saw the Magpies back on a winning streak, having defeated HBL last weekend after back-to-back losses and two weeks off due to byes.

While possession was fairly even in the first quarter as both teams came to terms with the slippery grounds, Busselton’s Christie Daniels was a highlight for the side producing two majors to get the black and whites off to a healthy start.

It was followed soon after by a goal from Beth Beckett, her first of three majors as the team’s leading scorer for the night.

While Eaton struggled to get the ball forward, they managed to break onto the scoreboard in the quarter with a single behind.

The second quarter saw the Magpies stretch their lead by 15 points, proving their class and rendering their opponents scoreless leading into the main break.

The Panther’s scoring drought ended in the third term, the team bagging the second behind and final behind for the game while improved defence work kept the Magpie’s working, managing to only achieve seven points for the quarter.

Try as they might, Carey Park were unable to retain the defensive pressure observed in the third quarter, allowing the Magpies to claim their highest scoring of the night with a total two goals and seven behinds to solidify the victory.

In addition to the hat-trick from Beckett, and back-to-back scores by Daniels, the three remaining goals came from Emma Borinelli, Mia Dronow and Katie-Jayne Grieves.

Going forward, the Magpies will go head-to-head with neighbouring side the Dunsborough Sharks, while Carey Park will not show their face until Round 19 with two weeks off.
