The family and friends of the 57-year-old man who was mauled by a shark on Saturday have been told to expect the worst.

The West Australian understands the family was essentially told the victim could not have survived the shark attack.

It has been more than 24 hours since the man was bitten, about 30m from the shore at Port Beach, and all that has been found to date is his goggles.

The family was reportedly delivered the bad news “pretty much immediately”.

“(The kids who witnessed the attack) tried to get between the shark and the guy, but it came back,” The West was told.

“I think they had tried to pull him into the boat.”

The victim has been described as a very kind, smart and “devoted dad” who “always did the right thing”.

“He was a really good man who was always happy and full of life,” a friend told The West.

“He loved those kids so much, he was such a good man.”

Police are still patrolling the area, but the beach is deserted.

A few locals have passed by, however they are not allowed to swim in the area.

The helicopter has been hovering all day and there appears to be just two police boats in the vicinity of yesterday’s attack.
