Kwinana colts broke a 40-year premiership drought on September 19, winning the 2020 Laurie Keene grand final, defeating Secret Harbour.

Kwinana lost the toss and kicked into a strong wind but their physicality was apparent around the ground, led by ruckman Joel Brown and midfield trio Noah Kirkwood, Sash Vaughan and Tyson Headland, who opened the scoring.

After lots of time spent forward without any reward a late goal from Tyler Kirkland extended the lead for Kwinana.

The second quarter brought more physicality around the contest with both sides moving the ball up and down the ground.

Dion Nelly was relentless with his pressure and attack on the ball sending it forward to a hard-leading Kyle Benbow. This created opportunity for two brilliant late goals from Headland which extended Kwinana’s lead to 19 points.

In the third quarter Secret Harbour came out firing with three quick goals in the first seven minutes.

After an arm wrestle for the rest of the term they scored a fourth from long range, putting them in front on the stroke of three-quarter-time.

Kwinana came out refocused in the last term and with a strong breeze at their backs started to get back on top at the stoppages and in general play.

A 50m set shot from Kirkland tied the scores before big Josh Elphick marked strongly and kicked truly to give Kwinana the lead.

Dan Morley crumbed the next goal to seal the premiership and bring a colts flag to Kwinana for the first time in their history.

The final score was Kwinana 7.6 (48) to Secret Harbour 5.6 (36).

Kwinana’s best players were Headland, Nelly, Kirkwood, Brown and Rhyan Hill.

Headland led the goal kicking with three majors.
