City of Rockingham announces Point Peron Spur Groyne upgrades complete

In welcome news for local skippers, the million dollar upgrades to the spur groyne and breakwater at the Point Peron boat launching facility are now officially complete.

Delivered under the $1.5 million budget at $1.3 million, the project involved the demolition of the old spur groyne and breakwater which were originally built in the 1970s.

An upgraded spur groyne 20m longer than the original was built in its place, along with an upgraded breakwater.

City of Rockingham mayor Deb Hamblin said the project aligned with the city’s aspiration of planning for future generations.

“The Point Peron boat launching facility is the most popular boating facility in the city and enjoyed by boaties year round and the delivery of a new spur groyne and breakwater means skippers will be able to launch and retrieve their vessels in safer conditions for many years to come,” she said.

“The latest works have been guided by the city’s coastal facilities strategy and follow on from several other upgrades in recent years.

“These include the addition of two concrete boat ramps, upgrades to the rock revetment wall, construction of reversing bays and an extension to the car park.”

The Department of Transport provided a $650,000 grant to the project.

The upgrades are expected to help protect the boat ramp from waves, providing safer conditions for people launching and retrieving their vessels.

It will also assist in limiting the build-up of sand in the Point Peron boat harbour while preventing beach erosion.
