South Brisbane MP Amy MacMahon returns to Qld parliament after serious crash

Greens MP Amy MacMahon has returned to Queensland parliament for first time since she was involved in a horrific crash that hospitalised her for weeks.

Dr MacMahon was taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition after her Toyota Prius and a Hyundai i30 collided outside the Pineapple Hotel in Kangaroo Point on February 12.

The MP had been travelling from one function to another when the collision occurred.

On Tuesday, she thanked the medical staff and those who helped her at the scene after her crash, including Greens Brisbane City councillor Trina Massey who arrived shortly after the crash and called an ambulance.

She also thanked first responders, the community, her friends and her family who supported her during her recovery.

“I returned to parliament today after two months of medical leave following a car crash and I have some recovery ahead of me but I’m feeling immensely grateful to be back at work,” Dr MacMahon said in parliament.

“Thank you also to Kitty Carra (Queensland Greens State Director), local residents, and staff at the Pineapple Hotel for their help on the night.

“Most importantly thank you to the doctors, nurses, paramedics and allied health workers at the Princess Alexandra Hospital for their ongoing care.

“I am a product of the public health system and I stand here today thanks to them.”

Last week, Dr MacMahon said she was “stoked” to return to parliament while still working on her recovery after the crash.

“The accident left me with some physical injuries and head injury, but I’ve been recovering really well with the support of an amazing medical and allied health team, and support from family, friends and colleagues,” Dr MacMahon shared on social media.

“I still have some physio and recovery ahead of me, but I’m feeling very lucky and grateful to be back working for our community.

I” wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who sent well-wishes, emails, cards, flowers and dropped by the office to check in over the last two months.

“I’ve been so touched by the generosity and care of the South Brisbane community, and I’m so proud to represent such an amazing community.”

Rani Paige Lowry was charged over the crash and will next appear in court on April 22.

Police will allege in court Ms Lowry was driving the Hyundai i30 at more than 80km/h in a 60km/h zone.

She remains on bail.
