Star of Drift and Dunsborough resident Myles Pollard has been named as this year’s CinefestOZ Cine-snaps patron.

The schools program is designed to give students an appreciation of the filmmaking process and encourage the next generation of industry professionals.

Pollard has come on board to share his experiences as both an actor and a drama teacher.

“It is really wonderful to see opportunities like this available to students in regions like South West WA who may otherwise not be exposed to the industry, ” he said.

“I am truly honoured to be part of the program and look forward to meeting some of the students who will be involved this year.

“Who knows? We could unearth a future Academy Award winner.”

Supported by Rio Tinto and ATCO Gas Australia, the program engages students and teachers through screenings, workshops and a short film competition.

For the competition, students had to produce a three to five-minute film based on the theme The Journey.

More than 100 students entered the competition and seven finalists from Cornerstone Christian College, Cape Naturaliste College and Georgiana Molloy Anglican School have been selected.

Their films will be judged by a high-profile industry panel and the winner will be announced at a grand finale on August 21.

CinefestOZ education officer Caroline Beamond said the high level of entries made it difficult to choose finalists.

“The jury members now have the unenviable job of trying to pick a winner, ” she said.

“It is really exciting to see the young talent coming through the ranks in WA.”
