The Bunbury City Council has announced the Australia Day celebrations which will replace the usual fireworks show.

The celebrations will take place at Bicentennial Square on January 26 from 4pm.

It will feature Australian films Blinky Bill, Paper Planes, and Strictly Ballroom on two big screens.

There will also be fun activities including dodgeball, a sand sculpture display and workshops, and outdoor carnival-style games for all to join in.

Bunbury Mayor Gary Brennan announced in December the City’s Australia Day fireworks show would no longer go ahead, in line with advice from the chief health officer.

City events officer Jade Evans said after a tumultuous 2020, the celebrations aimed to encourage a sense of community spirit.

“Everyone was confined to their homes and now we can be back with each other again,” she said.

That sense of connection will be great to celebrate the country so many of us call home.

There will be a welcome to country to start the events at Bicentennial Square.

Ms Evans said it would be a scaled-back version of what people were used to seeing in Bunbury for Australia Day.

“There will still be loads of activities, food, and still a great way to have a fun time with the family,” she said.

City of Bunbury community partnerships team leader Steve de Meillon said the event staff had done a great job putting the event together in line with restrictions.

“The team has done a great job, given COVID and the restrictions that we have got,” he said.

“Really trying to balance bringing people together without crowds, hence why we have moved to Bicentennial Square.

“We want to let people ... enjoy the Australia Day and then come down and enjoy the evening.”

The Australia Day citizenship ceremony and awards will take place at 8.30am.

All events will be in line with the current COVID-19 restrictions, and all attendees are asked to check in at the event by using the SafeWA app.

There will also be hand-washing and sanitiser facilities available.
