Last Saturday, the Busselton Dunsborough Dungbeetles travelled up the Forrest Highway to go head-to-head with Nedlands fourth grade, bringing home the gold in a 33-21 victory over the metro side.

The engine room upfront gained significant power with the return of James Miles and Chris Temple adding to the barnstorming runs of Josh Decaen, Brendan Fyfe and Josh Wilkes all crossing the game line.

Rocky Waters had his first run at flanker, consistently hitting his targets low and hard, complementing the dynamic duo of Quinny Robson and captain Ben Richards leading from the front, repeatedly stopping Nedlands’ attacking momentum.

The well-structured backline moves were orchestrated with the timing and precision by Wayne Green, the explosive power of Chris McLean pairing perfectly with the evasive running of Lochy Moore, who racked up his first hat-trick in Dungbeetles colours.

Lineouts were closely contested with Nedlands just coming out on top showing their experience, but the rush defence by Robson and Miles often shut down their advantage.

Nedlands tried easing the pressure on their defensive line by kicking up field but with the positional awareness of Jason Corkill at full back and his ability to marshal his two wingers in support saw the pressure was instantly reapplied, running the ball deep into Nedlands territory where the Dungbeetles forwards recycled the ball quickly.

A few costly lapses in concentration at the ends of both halves saw Nedlands pound on the pressure moving the ball quickly for a couple of well-worked tries out wide.

Two closely matched sides and a game played in good spirits especially for Chris McLean and Jason Corkill, who both played against their former club with plenty of mates in the opposition.

The Dungbeetles are now anticipating the return fixture at home in Busselton early September, set to clash with the South West rivals the Margaret River Gropers this Saturday at 2:30pm.
