Busselton Ironman opens entries to international athletes after two years of COVID-19 restrictions
Athletes across the world are pushing themselves to be in tip top shape as the GWM Busselton Ironman readies itself to welcome back international competitors after two years of Covid restrictions.
The annual bucket-list race on the Busselton’s picturesque foreshore has once again opened up its entries to the world following the State’s relaxed Covid-19 regulations and border controls. It will be held on December 4.
Ironman Oceania managing director Geoff Meyer said the return of international athletes showed the South West event continued to be popular outside the scope of WA.
“Athletes love everything that GWM Ironman Western Australia has to offer, from the incredible swim that goes alongside and under the historic Busselton Jetty, to the flat and fast bike course and the run that is lined with cheering spectators,” he said.
“After two years it’s great that we can welcome our international athletes back to this iconic event and with six months left until race day there’s still plenty of time for people to sign up and be on the start line.
“We already have athletes joining us from countries including New Zealand, Singapore, Japan, the United States and England and we look forward to seeing that list grow over the coming months.”
The fast, flat course through Busselton will see competitors soak in the sights of the Busselton Jetty and foreshore as they battle to be crowned winner on the world-renowned course which includes a 3.8km swim, 180m ride and 42.2km run.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Tourism Roger Cook said the event would be a major tourism boost to the South West region, with thousands expected to visit Busselton for the event.
“This world-class sporting event will drive visitors and spectators into WA’s fantastic South West, creating jobs and injecting millions into the local economy,” he said.
“GWM Ironman Western Australia typically delivers an economic boost of around $8 million to the local economy.
“It also generates national and international media coverage, and the 2022 event is set to be broadcast online into many of WA’s key international visitor markets, highlighting the South West region to a worldwide audience.”
