Busselton teen shaves hair

Busselton Dunsborough Times

A Christmas with trimmings has been given new meaning by a Capes teenager parting with her hair last week to support the fight against blood cancer.

Usually attracting attention for her BMX ability, 2012 Rising Sports Star award winner Brooke McFarlane has turned her focus to the Leukaemia Foundation World’s Greatest Shave.

While the official national event is not until March, the Year 8 Cape Naturaliste student felt compelled by the cause and chose to do it now to avoid being too close to the new school year.

“It started because my Nanna died of cancer and she was scared of losing her hair, so I wanted to do it for her,” she said.

“I was aiming for $500 or over and I’ve almost got that now … I think I’m just going to keep going and hopefully raise as much as I can.”

Brooke’s message to others was to shake off any fears about being without their lockes as there was good reason to participate.

“It’s for all those people who die and are going through this right now,” she said.

School chaplain Adrianne Sanzone said Brooke was an inspirational young person who showed amazing courage and integrity and had the respect of staff and students alike.
