Capel resident and cancer survivor Brian Fisher joins Cancer Council WA’s call for men to get health check

A Capel resident and cancer survivor is calling for men to stop being “the tough Aussie guy” and get their health checked this September for Prostate Cancer Awareness month. Brian Fisher is helping to spread Cancer Council WA’s message for men in the community to be prostate aware, saying it was important for men to listen to their bodies. “If you notice anything unusual, be sure to get it checked,” Mr Fisher said. “If you have a symptom, don’t mess round and be the tough Aussie guy. “None of this ‘I’ll be right’ nonsense — If you have a symptom, get to a doctor.” In WA in 2019, one in eight men were at risk of being diagnosed with prostate cancer by age by age 75. “In 2019, there were 2299 new cases of prostate cancer recorded and 248 deaths,’’ Cancer Council WA regional education officer Julie Rose said. “When cancer is found at an earlier stage, there is a better chance of successful treatment, so finding cancer early can make a real difference.”
