The Wardan Aboriginal Centre could be forced to close after the Busselton Shire Council denied its request for a rates exemption this week.

At Wednesday night’s meeting Bibelman Mia Aboriginal Corporation manager Bill Webb appealed to the council to be compassionate.

Mr Webb said he would be forced to close the centre without the local government’s support.

“It would be a great tragedy if we had to close down such an iconic place for the area,” he said.

An alternative motion by Councillor David Binks to defer the motion was, however, overturned four votes to three.

Shire president Ian Stubbs said he would organise a meeting with the chief executive and representatives from the Bibelman Mia Aboriginal Corporation, to talk about alternative forms of assistance.
