Dunsborough’s Lance Morris in the frame for potential Perth Scorchers debut in Melbourne

Dunsborough’s Lance Morris could make his Big Bash League debut for the Perth Scorchers on Wednesday night. The tearaway fast bowler, who made the shift from the Melbourne Stars during the off-season, has been named in an extended squad of 17 for the club’s Big Bash League clash with the Melbourne Renegades at Docklands Stadium. Morris had been unavailable for selection for the first four games of the tournament after straining his side on the second day of WA’s Sheffield Shield clash with Tasmania in November. He is the only addition to the squad, which has been extended from 16 to 17 to accommodate him. The Scorchers sit on top of the ladder unbeaten through four games and appear to be the team to beat in the tournament, despite playing just one game at home all season. The 23-year-old will be battling for a spot in the pace attack with Scorchers legends Andrew Tye and Jason Behrendorff and new English import Tymal Mills as well as Matt Kelly and David Moody. Moody and Kelly were the two seamers to miss out when an impressive bowling effort saw the Scorchers win by 42 runs over the Hobart Hurricanes on Monday night. Morris told the South Western Times ahead of the BBL season that he expected the bowling group to be rested and rotated at times during the tournament, especially when the team faces tight turnarounds. “Squad depth is going to be tested anyway, like every BBL campaign, because there are lots of games that are back to back or quite close together,” he said. “There will be times where someone needs to be rested or someone has a bit of a niggle and that’s just where little opportunities will open up. “We have got a pretty good bowling group so hopefully everyone stays reasonably fit.” The Scorchers’ unbeaten side will be difficult to crack into, but the injury-prone Behrendorff and Mills, who is fresh off a World Cup, a T10 tournament and a quarantine stint, could be in need of a rest. The Scarborough quick made both his Marsh One Day Cup and Sheffield Shield debuts for WA last summer. Monday night’s player of the match Kurtis Patterson has been named in the squad, despite concern over a quad injury.
