Football: Horror loss for Magpies a big blow

A blockbuster looms for Busselton in the home clash against Carey Park tomorrow night after their horror loss to Donnybrook at the weekend.

The Magpies went down to last year’s easybeats 13.10 (88) to 10.6 (66) on Saturday in a shock result for the reigning premiers.

They must now overcome the undefeated Panthers to keep in touch with the top teams.

Magpies coach Greg Hodson said he was disappointed with the loss, which resulted from a lack of scoring shots.

This was especially evident in the first half when Donnybrook got out to a six to one goal lead.

“You’re not going to win too many games kicking one goal in a half of football,” Hodson said.

“We’re certainly not having enough scoring opportunities.

“I don’t know if the guys are just not confident enough to have a shot at goal.”

The Magpies came back with a five-goal third quarter but it was not enough to compensate for their slow start.

Donnybrook’s new recruit, Jeff Smith, whom Hodson identified as a danger before the match, dominated with five goals.

For Busselton, Brock Monck and Alex Trombetta kicked three goals each and the usual suspects of Jordan Eastwell, Damian Lee, Tim Ioannou and captain Dan McGinlay were among the team’s best.

Hodson said poor first quarters were becoming a trend for Busselton, which was also evident in last year’s premiership season.

“We’ve had two slow starts now so we have to address it,” he said.

“It’s going to make it hard if you play catch-up for every win — and it’s going to make it stressful on the coach.

“Hopefully this week will be different at home under lights.”

Hodson said they might change up their warm-ups and routine before the game to get a better start.

Busselton host Carey Park from 6.10pm tomorrow night.
