Hottest 100: Margaret River star Peppa Lane and Spacey Jane feature in top three of massive music countdown

One of Australia’s most popular indie bands, featuring a Margaret River local on bass guitar, has rocketed to a second consecutive top three finish in Triple J’s Hottest 100. Margs’ Peppa Lane and her band Spacey Jane finished third in the popular countdown with their track Lots of Nothing, following on from their 2020 hit Booster Seat, which received a cult following after finishing second in last year’s edition. And it was a surprising winner that took out the number one spot this year, with iconic Australian children’s entertainers The Wiggles’ take on Tame Impala’s Elephant being voted as the country’s favourite track of the year. Holding Lane and Spacey Jane outside the top two was another big name, with Aboriginal rapper The Kid LAROI’s collaboration with pop megastar Justin Bieber coming in second, despite being the pre-count favourite. The West Australian band, who released two tracks this year in anticipation of their next album, posted to their Instagram page on Sunday thanking fans for their votes. “Thank you so much, from the bottom of our hearts,” the post read. “It’s f***ing insane to be here — what a dream come true, we love you all so much.” The band’s second track of 2021, Lunchtime, finished 12th in the countdown, while their take on the Beatles classic Here Comes the Sun for Triple J’s Like a Version also finished 30th. Meanwhile, Bunbury band Great Gable, whose song Hazy was eligible for the countdown, will have to wait another year for their Hottest 100 debut after also missing out on Friday’s Hottest 200 countdown. American artists Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, Lil Nas X and Doja Cat rounded out the top 10 of this year’s countdown, joining Aussie rockers Gang of Youths and their track The Angel of 8th Ave. and Rufus Du Sol’s On My Knees at the top.
