“Momentous occasion” as work starts on long-awaited Busselton Performing Arts and Convention Centre

The Busselton Foreshore is one step closer to becoming a hive of arts and culture after the first sod was turned on the multimillion-dollar Busselton Performing Arts and Convention Centre. The City of Busselton mayor joined dozens of community and project representatives on Wednesday to turn the sod on the highly anticipated BPACC, due to open in 2023. The $38 million project will a become a diverse hub for the city’s creative sector featuring a 625-seat theatre, conference and event space to host 400 people and a state-of-the-art gallery for art exhibitions. City of Busselton Mayor Grant Henley said it was a “momentous occasion”. “We certainly believe in the dream of our community delivering a quality performing arts space that will be loved and used by all,” he said. Mr Henley said the project would not be possible without many helping hands. “We absolutely thank the support of the Federal Government who gave us $10.35 million and Nola Marino who advocated for that, as well as the support of Rio Tinto,” he said. “We’re here, let’s get going.” The new project aims to link the newly revitalised Busselton Foreshore with the town centre, serving as a prime destination for conferences, events and trade shows. Broad Australia general manager Cyril Cahill said he was proud to be involved in the developments. “We’re looking forward to being involved in this iconic project, it’s a big step for Busselton,” he said. “For us it’s all about local engagement and community participation.” Broad Construction have also hired three direct employees who will be based in Busselton for the duration of the project, including senior site manager Benson King who recently moved down to the area with his wife and kids. Additionally there is a contract administrator based in Bunbury with all other workers set to come down from Perth on a drive in, drive out basis. Mr Cahill said the team can’t wait to get stuck in. “We’re excited about this, it’s going to be a big month here on the project,” he said.
