With the Ironman 70.3 event taking place next weekend, the call has gone out for volunteers.

Picture by Becky Felstead: Busselton Ironman 70.3 organisers are looking for more volunteers to join Andrew Nairn, Mariska Ackerman and Ray McMillan.

Up to 350 volunteers are required for the event, which will take place on Saturday, May 5.

Busselton Chamber of Commerce chief executive Ray McMillan is urging individuals and businesses to get involved with the local event.

He said event organisers were about halfway to the numbers required, with plenty of returning volunteers as well as people from across the South West region and from Perth signing up.

With competitor numbers up 50 per cent on last year, Mr McMillan said this year’s event was fairly intensive and organisers were in need of volunteers who could help out for the whole race.

Local business owner Andrew Nairn said he had been encouraging his staff to volunteer for the past two years.

“Volunteers are so vital for the event, and as a local business it’s important to support the event,” he said.

“Volunteering together at the event is almost like team bonding for employees, it gets them out there and we have a great time together.”
