Your favourite childhood stories are coming to Busselton, creating a true sense of nostalgia for a local actor who is taking to the stage one last time before leaving the South West.

Local drama school Acting Up is presenting a colourful production of Seussical the Musical at the Weld Theatre this July, fronted by “veteran” Emily Lyons.

Lyons, 18, will lead the cast as the Cat in the Hat, telling the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust that contains the Whos, including Jojo, a Who child sent off to military school for “thinking too many thinks.”

Weaving together a variety of Dr Seuss classics, Lyons said the show has something for everyone, be it “bright and colour” for younger audiences or comforting “nostalgia” for older patrons.

Having first appeared with Acting Up in their 2016 production of Alice in Wonderland in the role of the caterpillar’s tail, Lyons said she is excited to step into a principal role for her final performance with the group before leaving for Perth to go to university.

“I’ve never had a part as big as this,” she said.

“I’ve always sort of been in supporting roles like the genie in Aladdin and one of the children in the Sound of Music . . . so I’ve definitely worked my way up the hierarchy.”

She said she is thankful to have grown up in such a wonderful “second family.”

“I’ve grown up with these kids for the last seven, eight years watching them grow,” she said.

“A lot of them are the age now that I was when I started doing drama, and the connection I’ve made with these people... they’ve honestly made my teenage years growing up.”

Seussical the Musical will run from July 1-16, with tickets available at https://www.trybooking.com/events/landing/869686.
