A Busselton young gun says it is “pretty surreal” that he has been selected for the WA State Under 16s team.

16-year-old Tyler Lindberg was named as part of the squad of 35 in April, and on Tuesday night solidified his position in the 25-strong team that will travel to South Australia this weekend to compete in the Under 16s AFL National Championships.

Lindberg is one of seven South West boys selected for the outfit and hopes to do his hometown proud as its sole representative.

“Knowing that I’m the only kid from Busso is really cool; I’m getting a lot of compliments from people but just trying to stay humble,” he said.

“I’m really looking forward to playing in front of AFL recruiters and getting get looked at early because next year is 18s, draft year as well, so for me it’s just about getting noticed now and playing good footy over there.

“I really want to have a good carnival and get picked for the Australian Under 18s team.”

The Georgiana Molloy student started with the Rovers Junior Football club when he was in Year 4 and had a stint with Countrys Football Club before being selected for the South West Futures Academy.

Proving his long-term commitment to the sport, he now travels to Perth three times a week to play with the East Perth Colts.

He looks up to the likes of Fremantle defender Luke Ryan and Collingwood captain Scott Pendlebury and hopes he too can be a role model for young athletes.

“When footy is getting tough, don’t give it up,” he said.

“Out of junior footy you can pretty much do anything you want, so just play hard and make sure you make the correct decisions, and don’t ever give back anything you’re given.”
