Bunbury’s Jayden Goodwin produces heroic T20 final knock at the WACA, as Sheffield Shield return announced

A run-a-ball 47 by Bunbury’s Jayden Goodwin has come agonisingly close to breaking Subiaco-Floreat’s duck in Western Australia’s leading T20 cricket competition. The young gun did his best to lead his side to victory in Sunday’s Premier T20 final at the WACA Ground, but in a tense final over finish, Melville were seen over the line by a quick Brad Turner cameo. Goodwin, batting at number four, arrived at the crease with his side languishing at 2-14. Another three wickets would fall during his stay, but the composed left-hander battled through a difficult spell of bowling from experienced seamer Mark Turner and WACA-contracted rookie Bryce Jackson. He fell just moments after reverse-sweeping the spin of Turner to the third-man boundary for four, with the wiley spinner first beating Goodwin’s outside edge before he holed out to long-on the next ball. His 46-ball 47 was the 20-year-old’s highest score in the competition this season through four games. It comes as a return to play date for the State’s Sheffield Shield and Marsh One Day Cup teams were confirmed. The Shield side, which Goodwin, fellow Colts Cricket Club product Sam Whiteman and Dunsborough seamer Lance Morris were all a part of before the Big Bash League break, resumes its season against New South Wales at Bankstown Oval on March 15. They then face Victoria in a clash which is, at this stage, fixtured at the WACA. Meanwhile the one day side, which Whiteman and Morris have featured in this summer, plays one more clash against Victoria at the Junction Oval in St Kilda before the final at the same venue on March 11. WA are on top of the ladder in both competitions.
