CinefestOZ Cinesnap student short film competition to get cash prize for 2022 round

The CinefestOZ annual Cinesnaps competition has raised the stakes, with a cash prize for the first time. The 10th anniversary of the film festival student competition will offer a $1000 cash prize to students in the Year 10-12 category for pieces on next year’s theme, Space. Each year the Cinesnaps Short Film Competition invites regional secondary students to create an original three-to-five-minute short film on a specific theme. Taking place across two categories, Year 7-9 and 10-12, the competition aims to highlight the festival’s commitment to student filmmaking in WA. CinefestOZ chief executive Malinda Nixon said the development of the cash prize for teens was an indication of how much the program had grown over a decade. “We are beyond excited to be able to offer $1000 to the winning team of our popular student short film competition which has been a huge generator for school engagement and participation with Cinefest-OZ,” she said. “To see our young, regional students stepping into filmmaking with Cinesnaps and then using their learnings to pursue a career in Australian film, that’s what it’s all about.” The competition forms part of the Cinesnaps Program for students and teachers, which has engaged more than 32,000 regional students since it began in 2008.
