Golf: Bunbury Golf Club’s Lilli Andrew on course for bright future in golf

Bunbury Golf Club member Lilli Andrew is having an unforgettable year on the green. In three years since taking up the sport via scholarship, Lilli, 14, has not only dropped her handicap from 54 to 5.1, but won multiple club gold letter women’s events. Lilli’s handicap is also the best among all female members at the BGC. Despite this incredible progression, the talented Clifton Park-based teenager is taking nothing for granted. “I’ve always just wanted to work on a few things,” she said. “If I didn’t really like how I played after a round, I’d go back out and hit some practise balls.” If she is not at school working hard, chances are you will find Lilli on course at either Bunbury or Capel — fiercely determined in her desire to improve. “I like the characteristics of how Bunbury plays,” she said. “And I like hole 10, especially when the ball is going into the wind, because I can then go up a club and try to smash it; instead of going with a lower club and trying to hit it a bit harder.” Lilli is hopeful more South West female athletes will be enticed to take up the sport in future. “Golf is just a brilliant game,” she said. “It’s 90 per cent mental, so you are going to have the strength to push through, even if you play a bad shot. But it’s really good because you get to go out on course, play with some friends and have some fun.”
