The rising stars of South West hockey showcased their skills in the Future Thundersticks Classic in Perth at the weekend. Six youngsters from the region took to the pitch in the first round of the tournament on Sunday, which featured four teams in both the girls and boys league. Two of the teams in each league were from the under 13 State development teams — announced earlier this month — while the other two are from the Perth Thundersticks 14s academy. Under 13 boys State players Harry Burns, of Bunbury Grammar, and Quinn Jones, of Towns Souths, represented the Lightning, while Boyanup goalkeeper Phaedruss Liddiard played for the Storm. Bunbury’s Bede Wetherall and Busselton’s Oscar Male from the Perth Thundersticks 14s academy played for the Highlanders. The Lightning are fourth in the competition, while the Highlanders and Storm are in second and third place respectively. Under 13s girls State player Waireana Pohe from Towns Souths played for the Lightning, who are in third place in the girls competition. Each team will play each other again once more this weekend before the finals on Sunday afternoon at Perth Hockey Stadium.
