Rugby Union: South West rugby union in good hands following turbulent period due to COVID-19 pandemic

The Dunsborough-Busselton Dungbeetles enjoyed an unforgettable year, winning the 2023 FMG Community Grade grand final over the Mandurah Pirates in Perth. While the 7-5 victory was relished by those on the pitch, for those off it, it was equally satisfying. “Five years ago, we were the Dunsborough Dungbeetles and the Busselton Jets were the junior club,” former club president Chris Greenland said. “Once the amazing Barnard Park facility along the Busselton foreshore was built, we decided to make the move and became the Dunsborough-Busselton Dungbeetles. “The juniors then came on board and the club engaged with the City of Busselton in a bid to become one club. “In 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic happened, we had a South West rugby competition, which wasn’t thriving, but it was definitely surviving. “Then rugby in the South West stopped and we practically dissolved, having only two players and a president. “However, we made a decision that no one wanted the club to die — we wanted rugby to survive in the South West and began working with Rugby WA, to secure games in the region.” With players and volunteers banding together, the Dungbeetles returned to senior action in 2023 via the FMG Community Grade competition, sweeping all before them. Greenland has since stepped aside from his role as president, although still volunteers. Matching his reign are Brendan McKeating and Paul Hacquoil, who have done a sterling job in not only promoting the club, but maintaining the strong foundations laid during the pandemic. Due to its ideal location, Barnard Park is expected to become a hit for South West and travelling Perth-based players alike, due to its holiday-like feel. “Wanneroo came down last year — and we didn’t think they would travel all that way for a one-off game,” Greenland said. They absolutely loved it. The facilities and show we can put on? It’s something we’re very proud of as a club.”
