South West AFL Watch: Harvey’s Brady Hough steps up for West Coast, Busselton’s Jye Amiss kept quiet

The West Coast Eagles might still be at the bottom of the ladder following an 81-point mauling by the Brisbane Lions but Harvey’s Brady Hough has proved he has what it takes to hold his own against some tough forwards. The 20-year-old played a crucial role in the Eagles’ defence, keeping prolific forward Charlie Cameron goalless during West Coast’s 16.20 (116) to 5.5 (35) loss to the Lions at the Gabba on Saturday. Hough was named one of the Eagles’ best, finishing with 22 disposals, 14 marks, two tackles, five intercept possessions, two score involvements and five pressure acts. Dunsborough’s Reuben Ginbey continued to provide the pressure within the midfield, finishing with 12 disposals, a mark, three tackles, an intercept possession, a score involvement, 30 pressure acts, three clearances and an inside 50. On the back of signing a contract extension to the end of the 2029 season, Busselton’s Jye Amiss was kept uncharacteristically quiet as Fremantle’s bid for the finals hangs in the balance. Fremantle suffered a disappointing 14.14 (98) to 6.9 (45) loss to Carlton at Optus Stadium on Sunday, where Amiss was kept to just one goal after several missed opportunities. Despite managing a goal off a set shot during the final term, it was clear Amiss was disappointed with his earlier set shots falling just short, along with being stifled by Carlton’s defenders. Along with the goal, the 19-year-old ultimately finished with six disposals, four marks, a tackle, four score involvements and two pressure acts. Former Harvey-Brunswick-Leschenault Lion Ethan Hughes was kept busy in Fremantle’s backline, finishing with 11 disposals, five marks, a tackle, four intercept possessions, a goal assist, two score involvements, seven pressure acts and two inside 50s. Earlier in the round, former Manjimup Tiger Marlion Pickett helped Richmond hold off a determined Sydney outfit to win 12.16 (88) to 11.9 (75) at the MCG on Thursday. Pickett kicked the first goal of the second term to help bring Richmond back from falling behind in the first quarter, and managed six disposals, two marks, four tackles, a behind, two intercept possessions, three score involvements, 14 pressure acts and two inside 50s.
