South West AFL Wrap: Region’s best on display during Western Derby
Some of the South West’s brightest stars were on full display at Optus Stadium at the weekend as Fremantle and West Coast engaged in a physical western derby.
During the third round of the 2023 AFL season, Busselton’s Jye Amiss, former HBL Lion Ethan Hughes and Dunsborough’s Reuben Ginbey lined up for an action-packed western derby 56 on Sunday.
While Fremantle managed a dramatic 16.12 (108) to 9.13 (67) win over the Eagles, Ginbey was named among the best of the injury-hit Eagles for the match.
Starting in the midfield, Ginbey managed 20 disposals, a mark, eight tackles, two score involvements, 29 pressure acts, six clearances and four inside 50s.
Meanwhile, Amiss made an impact on the scoreboard for the Dockers, booting two goals just minutes apart in the opening term.
The Busselton product finished the match with nine disposals, three marks, a behind, five score involvements and 11 pressure acts.
Hughes also did a solid job in Fremantle’s defensive half, managing 12 disposals, seven score involvements, eight pressure acts and an inside 50.
Elsewhere, former Manjimup Tiger Marlion Pickett made an impact within the midfield during Richmond’s 8.15 (63) to 7.7 (49) loss to Collingwood at the MCG on Friday night.
Pickett racked up 19 disposals, five marks, two tackles, four intercept possessions, a goal assist, four score involvements, 11 pressure acts and two clearances.
