Busselton Magpies have strengthened their finals credentials with a big percentage boost after keeping the Eaton Boomers scoreless, souring Boomer Jess Ruland’s 50th game milestone. The Magpies hosted the Boomers at Sir Stewart Bovell Park on Saturday during the 10th round of the 2022 SWFL Women’s season, where Busselton were quick to take control after an initial scramble for the ball. An early goal from Ebony Hay opened the floodgates for Busselton, led by a strong midfield effort from Katie-Jayne Grieve. Although the Boomers tried to stifle Busselton’s efforts, the Magpies stayed in control with further goals from Emma Borinelli and Dianna Evans to assert early dominance. At quarter time, Busselton led 3.3 (21) to 0.0 (0). The second quarter saw Busselton continue to dominate the field as Eaton continued trying to put the pressure on. However, the Boomers would be shaken up after Emily Davenport copped a falcon as she tried to smother the ball. Busselton remain composed as Grieve continued charging her way through the midfield to drive the ball forward. Busselton were kept scoreless in the quarter but still led by 25 points at half-time. Busselton’s domination continued into the third quarter with an early goal from Kelsey Della Bosca. Despite Eaton having a number of opportunities to move the ball outside of Busselton’s forward 50, they struggled maintaining possession as Busselton continued extending their lead with goals from Borinelli and Mia Dronow to lead by 45 points at the final change. The last quarter saw Busselton seemingly run a victory lap around the Boomers with a third goal from Borinelli sealing the win 7.11 (53) to 0.0 (0). Grieve, Borinelli and Katisha Barrett were named among Busselton’s best while the likes of Sophie Oldfield, Kiarni Stevens and Sophie Coates were among Eaton’s best.
