SWFL 2022: Busselton’s Katie-Jayne Grieve adds another individual accolade for stellar grand final performance

Just two weeks after she became the runaway winner of the SWFL’s Nola Marino medal, Busselton midfielder Katie-Jayne Grieve has added another individual accolade to cap off a stellar season. Following the Magpies’ historic maiden women’s grand final victory over Bunbury last Sunday, Grieve took home the Optus Medal after she was voted the best on ground for the match. Grieve was instrumental in Busselton’s premiership win, making quick clearances from the centre of the field to drive the ball forward to help the Magpies come from being kept scoreless to swooping on the lead during the match’s second quarter. The 25-year-old also provided plenty of pressure within the midfield, laying plenty of tackles, scurrying through traffic and putting her body on the line when she took a heavy knock during the match’s dying minutes. Speaking to the South Western Times, Grieve said she felt “ecstatic” to win the Optus Medal. “I couldn’t have done it without the girls’ support,” she said. “It was such a good atmosphere out there and the crowd was just awesome.” Grieve said the historic grand final win was certainly the main goal Busselton had been working towards all throughout the season, maintaining plenty of confidence in their capabilities. “From the get-go of this season it was something we all put our mind to and that was really our goal,” she said. “We really worked hard and we all knew we were capable of doing it. “I think we were confident the whole way through just knowing where our strengths were and knowing we’re a capable group. “We’re all in it together and we brought home the choccies.” The accolade ticks off another achievement for the former AFLW player, who previously took home the Nola Marino medal for her 10 best-on-ground performances throughout the regular season.
