SWFL 2023: Ben Perry’s passion for coaching remains, will always be committed to putting players first

On the back of giving his all for two seasons, Ben Perry reached the SWFL premiership summit last season, guiding Busselton to a thrilling grand final win over South Bunbury in the reserves. While the passion was still there, Perry informed the Magpies a few weeks ago of his decision to step away from the role, as he wanted the players to benefit from a fresh voice in 2024. “I felt like I wanted to see what other opportunities were out there — but at the same time, I was mindful of the fact there were a lot of guys unfortunate to miss out playing in the grand final. “I didn’t want this to discourage them from coming back to Busselton next year and playing. As perhaps, they felt not so good about not playing in the grand final. “It was a great opportunity for both Daniel Delaney (former league coach) and I to step aside, as it gives the boys a fresh voice, keeps them motivated and hopefully will help them strive towards going back-to-back.” Throughout his two-year stint, Perry worked his socks off, from executing on game day to being on call should any of his players need advice. The passion for working and helping players from all walks of life inspires him every day and he’s excited about his coaching future. “To be honest, as a young child, I grew up never meeting my father,” Perry said. “I initially never had any interest in coaching — but what coaching has really taught me is the impact it can have on people and their lives. “It was incredible to win the grand final. “But what really stands out for me is that by spending the amount of time together that we as coaches do at these football clubs, we can impact, motivate and do something positive. “It’s a great position of influence, being a coach, because these boys want to play footy. And the culture of a footy club is a great avenue for them to be great men and great fathers. “And if they kick goals to win a grand final? That’s a bonus. It’s just beautiful to be a part of a football club in the community as it does so much good for these young men.” Perry praised Delaney and Magpies colts coach Ray Gannaway for supporting him throughout his stint at Sir Stewart Bovell Park and said he would be forever grateful for their kindness.
