The Organic Weigh is a small locally owned and operated business that made its debut at the Saturday morning markets last year.

The business started off stocking the staple pantry items in bulk such as rice, flour, sugar and granola.

As interest grew, oats, liquorice, dates, coconut chips and even locally grown chickpeas were added.

The idea of the business is to reduce unnecessary packaging and food waste. Think about those times you may have needed one cup of rice or flour, but the supermarkets only sell them in packs of 1kg or more. These situations can cause unwanted food waste and unnecessary packaging.

The Organic Weigh provides the opportunity to buy as much or as little as needed and encourage customers to bring their own containers or bulk food bags.

There are zero-waste items out there that you probably didn’t know exist. Reusable zip-lock bags, silicone baking mats or even silicone wrap.

The range was expanded to include products from Seed & Sprout and Grants Toothbrushes. Both suppliers specialise in items that are zero to low waste such as bamboo toothbrushes, metal straws, bulk food bags, mesh grocery bags, dish and shampoo bars.

Also stocked are products from Who Gives A Crap, a business that supports zero waste with half their profits donated to help build toilets.

Toilet paper, tissues and paper towel are purchased in bulk, free from any plastic packaging.

You can make a difference by replacing items in your home with package-free ones. Here are a few ideas to swap:

Shampoo bottles with shampoo bars

Plastic toothbrush with a bamboo toothbrush

Dishwashing liquid bottle with a dish bar

Foil or baking paper with a silicone baking mat

Synthetic dish sponge with a natural loofah

Whether growing your own veggies, recycling, living a zero-waste lifestyle, or shopping second hand we all have a role to play to preserve and care for our environment.

The Organic Weigh hopes to continue to grow, educate, encourage and offer a more sustainable shopping experience.
