A new Forrestdale bridge, due to open on Friday, has been named after World War I hero and Victoria Cross recipient Hugo Throssell.

Designed to reduce congestion, the Hugo Throssell VC Bridge spans Nicholson Road and forms part of the State and Federal Government's $145 million duplication of Armadale Road.

The son of WA’s second Premier George Throssell, Hugo was born in 1884 and landed at Gallipoli in August 1915 with the 10th Light Horse Regiment.

He was awarded the Victoria Cross for action on August 29-30 at Hill 60 where, despite being wounded twice, he refused medical aid and continued to shout encouragement to his men.
