Kerri Clark: Busselton woman recounts terrifying story after floating 3km out to sea on inflatable boat

A Busselton woman has told of the terrifying moment she found herself lost at sea on the night of Christmas Eve after accidentally falling asleep in an inflatable boat. Kerri Clark, 55, had decided to take her new inflatable boat out for a ride near Geographe Bay Yacht Club in Busselton about 5pm on Christmas Eve. But what she thought would be a quick trip to the beach to soak up the last hours of festive sunshine quickly turned into a near-death experience after she accidentally fell asleep in the boat. “I remember waking up in the pitch black, surrounded by ocean as far as I could see,” Ms Clark said. “It was so scary. I really thought I was a goner.” By this point, Ms Clark had managed to drift 3km out to sea and her boat began to rapidly fill up with water. “I was screaming out for help and waving my oar in the air to try and get someone to notice,” Ms Clark said. “My boat started to fill up with water and I became so cold.” “At one point I felt a big nudge and thought it was a shark.” Ms Clark believes she had fallen asleep because of a new medication that she had recently started, which caused her to doze off for a second time, only to be awoken by the sounds of a helicopter flying overhead. “I remember waking up from the helicopter flying overhead and its lights shining over me,” she said. “I was crying, I was so happy to see it.” Water Police and Busselton Marine Rescue were alerted to the unfolding situation on Christmas Eve at about 8pm, after receiving reports of a person adrift at sea. The RAC rescue helicopter was then deployed to help locate Ms Clark, who was located about 1km northeast of the famously long Busselton Jetty — meaning Ms Clark had drifted almost 3km out to sea. Ms Clark says it was about another half an hour until a rescue boat recovered her. “They just grabbed me and pulled me on board.” “I was so relieved.” After staying the night at Busselton Health Campus for hypothermia treatment, Ms Clark said she feels “forever grateful” for the people who saved her life. “I want to say a huge thank you to RAC and all the people who saved me,” she said. “My family and I can’t thank them enough.” Ms Clark is planning on donating a painting to the rescue team to show her appreciation. Busselton Marine Rescue chronicled the ordeal via its Facebook page on Monday morning, thanking first responders for helping avoid tragedy this holiday season. “A great result and big thank you for the first responders & police for their efforts in bringing what could have been a tragic outcome to a successful conclusion,” the post read.
