West Coast Eagles defender Harry Edwards has shared a heartbreaking personal update following the death of his father.
The 25-year-old took to social media on Sunday to reveal the devastating news.
“Rest easy old fella. Love and miss you so much. Your resilience has been truly inspiring to many. Have a few beers up there for me,” he wrote.
Edwards shared a carousel of photos spanning the years, including a childhood snap of the pair watching an AFL game together and another showing his father supporting him during his West Coast Eagles career.
The emotional tribute was flooded with messages of support from teammates and the wider AFL community.
“Love you mate ❤️,” fellow Eagle Harry Barnett wrote.
Bo Allan and Tom McCarthy were among several teammates to leave love heart emojis in support.
The heartbreaking family loss comes as Edwards continues to wait on a decision about his AFL future.
West Coast remain in the dark over whether the key defender will be cleared to play again after he met with the AFL’s concussion panel earlier this week.
Edwards is awaiting the panel’s verdict after suffering three concussions in the space of 71 days earlier this season.
Edwards sustained his first concussion in the pre-season loss to Port Adelaide before going down again in round two against North Melbourne.
He returned through the WAFL before earning a recall in the round nine defeat to Melbourne at Marvel Stadium when he again copped a head knock and has been sidelined since.
The defender travelled to Melbourne to appear before the same panel that ruled former Eagles premiership star Jeremy McGovern would have to retire because of ongoing concussion concerns.
Speaking after Saturday night’s loss to Carlton, Eagles coach Andrew McQualter said the club was still waiting for an outcome.
“Not at this stage but when we do have an update we’ll make sure that we get that out as soon as possible,” he said.
