As Freo Fever continues to mount across Perth, residents have been warned that cold weather could dampen their finals celebrations.
Many Perth locals awoke to cloudy skies and some light drizzle on Wednesday morning — a notable difference from the crystal-clear conditions the WA capital has been met with in recent days.
Senior Bureau meteorologist Angus Hines told PerthNow the mid-week dreary weather is short-lived, with the weather expected to turn sunny and warm by the early afternoon.
“The weather will be relatively minor over Wednesday, with a couple of showers lightly sprinkling across Fremantle and some southern suburbs during the morning and midday,” he said.
“The sun should re-emerge by the early afternoon.”
The sunshine will continue into Thursday, with clear skies proving that the spring weather is in full bloom.
The mercury on Thursday is set to reach a toasty maximum of 22C, with experts revealing the conditions will remain warm and dry throughout the day.
“There won’t be much wind, maybe just a small breeze, so it’ll be a lovely sunny day,” Mr Hines said.
Conditions will take a turn on Friday however, as a cold front moves over the State, bringing rainfall and chilly winds to Western Australia.
While Perth is expected to face some showers from the system, the Bureau says residents in the South West will bear the brunt of the bad weather.
“The good news for Perth is the front isn’t a direct hit — it’s heading almost directly south so it will mostly affect the areas near Margaret River, Albany, and the South West capes,” Mr Hines continued.
“There may be a passing shower or two in the Perth and Fremantle areas, and the change in weather will cause temperatures to feel colder and breezier towards the late afternoon.”
The chilly weather will carry through to AFL Grand Final Day, when thousands are expected to descend on Fremantle to cheer the Dockers on as they battle for a historic maiden premiership.
BOM forecasts heavy cloud coverage over the Port City, with showers possible across the entire metropolitan area.
“We may start to see rain around Perth from the early afternoon, with patches also possible through the rest of the day and evening,” Mr Hines said.
Brisk coastal winds will also add to the frigid conditions — with the weather expert urging Dockers fans to consider donning their long sleeved guernseys for the final instead.
“If you have one, wearing the purple long sleeve to watch the match is a good move with the wind chill making the weather feel colder,” he said.
With a minimum of 3mm of rainfall on the cards for Saturday, he also encouraged fans to consider packing extra gear to protect them from showers.
“It’s definitely not a bad idea to bring a rain jacket or an umbrella just in case, but there’s a decent chance you won’t need it,” he said.
Perth won’t be the only Aussie city facing rain on Saturday, with Melbourne also expected to receive showers on game day.
“Their forecast there has deteriorated in the past couple days,” Mr Hines revealed.
“We’re expecting to see a bit of rainfall during the Dockers v Lions game, so it could be damp at the MCG as well.”
After two days of on-and-off showers, the worst of the wet weather will hit Perth on Sunday — with up to 7mm of rainfall anticipated to drizzle over the city.
The mercury is expected to reach a high of 20C, but Mr Hines warns that lingering winds from Saturday will make temperatures feel closer to 15C.
Showers will continue sporadically through Monday and Tuesday, with experts predicting a total of 5mm to pour over the city during the early week.
