A pregnant woman is mourning the loss of her husband after he plummeted six metres while rock climbing.

Andy Ferrarone was visiting Big Bear in California with his wife, Nina, and another couple on July 12 when the tragedy happened.

While setting up his equipment for a rock climb, Mr Ferrarone fell around six metres.

After being rescued by a helicopter, the 33-year-old was taken to hospital with head trauma.

Three days later, on July 15, his life support was turned off.

Mr Ferrarone’s wife, a flight attendant, is more than eight weeks pregnant.

Close friend Brian Cox told the San Diego Tribune that Mr Ferrarone was an “expert” climber.

“Andy is a pro-level rock climber,” he said.

“He’s an expert at his craft... He taught me how to rock climb.”

Mr Cox described his long-time friend as a “giving guy” who would “secretly pay the bill”.

“Andy is the single kindest person I know,” he said.

“He was an angel we were borrowing for some time.”

A GoFundMe has been established by Mr Cox to help his wife navigate the “unimaginable loss” of Mr Ferrarone.

In less than a week it has raised more than $US49,000 ($A70,447), which will go towards covering medical bills, rent, and baby supplies.

In the fundraiser’s description, Mr Cox wrote that he wanted to ensure the legacy of Mr Ferrarone lived on through his unborn child.

“While she bravely committed to keep the baby, she now faces the challenge of preparing for parenthood alone,” he wrote.

“Andy and Nina were known for their warmth and outgoing spirit, and the love they shared touched everyone around them.

“By helping Nina, you honour Andy’s memory and ensure his legacy lives on through their baby.”

Mr Ferrarone’s funeral will be held on August 15.
