PNG leader James Marape assures Australia of close ties and warns economic strength and security are linked

Papua New Guinea’s leader has used an historic speech to reassure Australia that his nation will remain close and emphasised his desire for it to stand on its own two feet economically. Prime Minister James Marape became the first Pacific leader to address a joint sitting of Parliament on Thursday, as Australia seeks to strengthen ties within the Pacific amid muscular posturing from China. Mr Marape said his aim was to move PNG away from being an aid recipient nation to one that was safe, secure and economically self-reliant. “It must become a strong country, standing on its two feet, economically independent and strong,” he said. “A strong, economically empowered Papua New Guinea means a stronger Australia and a more secure Australia-Pacific.” He noted PNG was on the western fringes of the Pacific region and thus had a central role to play in retaining peace and stability. “This is something that has been done with a sense of urgency and we take this responsibility seriously,” he said. PNG and Australia struck a $200 million security deal in December supporting policing, courts and correctional services along with focuses on climate change and cybersecurity. PNG has also been courted by China to do a deal on security and policing, with US officials urging it to reject the advances. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said this security deal would be central to the “decisive decade” ahead and PNG’s aspirations. “Mr Prime Minister, Australia wants to build this future with you and secure it with you, as your primary partner,” he said. Opposition Leader Peter Dutton was more pointed with his comments, warning that the world was “in times of emboldened autocrats who have no hesitation in using inducements, coercion and outright force against other nations to realise their zero-sum ambitions”. “These autocrats — who use the carrot one day and the stick the next — have a complete disregard for sovereignty, for law and liberty,” he said in welcoming Mr Marape to Parliament. Foreign Minister Penny Wong said Australia recognised it lived in a different era with more competing interests. “We know that China is a great power asserting its interests,” she said. “What we are doing is re-emphasising our part in the Pacific family and the importance of that engagement. “I know that we have to work harder and that’s what we’ll keep doing.” Papua New Guinea celebrates its 50th anniversary of independence in 2025 and Mr Marape dwelled on the gratitude the nation still held for former Labor prime minister Gough Whitlam for setting it up as a sovereign nation. “The imprint of Australia is second to none in Papua New Guinea. Your legacies live on,” he said. Mr Albanese said the 1975 move was underpinned by “a universal truth” that still held: “Every Pacific nation, big and small, has the right to shape its own future and secure its own destiny.”
