State election 2021: WA Liberal Party refuses to put One Nation last, sparking attack from Mark McGowan

The WA Liberal Party is refusing to put One Nation candidates last on how-to-vote cards, sparking a stinging attack from WA Labor Premier Mark McGowan. Despite the WA Liberals saying no preference deal has been struck between themselves and One Nation, they are refusing to commit to putting Pauline Hanson’s party last on their ballot papers. The preference spat comes four years after the Liberals and One Nation struck the infamous preference deal, which saw One Nation preferenced ahead of The Nationals, in the country regions of the Upper House. “The Liberal Party are dancing with the devil,” Mr McGowan said. “The major political parties — Liberals, Nationals, Labor, should all agree to put One Nation last. Unfortunately, the Liberal Party is now doing a deal with One Nation.” This election, the Liberals and the Nationals have struck a deal to preference each other. Where the Liberals will preference One Nation remains to be seen. But it is understood that in the Mining and Pastoral Region, for example, the Liberals will preference One Nation MLC Robin Scott third on the ballot paper — just after the Nationals. It was widely speculated today that One Nation would preference the Liberals in the Lower House. “I will make one thing clear. We will put One Nation last,” Mr McGowan said. “The Liberal Party is not putting One Nation last. We have a very strong view that the division created by One Nation has no place in WA.” A Liberal spokesperson said today decisions on preferences would be made “seat by seat”. “The Liberals and Nationals have agreed to directly exchange preferences. All other considerations are seat by seat,” the spokesperson said. “The biggest risk at this election is Labor’s plan to take total control of our Parliament, removing the important checks and balances.” Among parties registered to contest the March 13 election are the No Mandatory Vaccination Party, Legalise Cannabis Western Australia Party and the WAxit Party. Mr McGowan said Labor would put the “anti-vaxxers second last”. Liberal leader Zak Kirkup said on Saturday there was no preference deal between the Liberals and One Nation. “There are some very dangerous fringe groups, therefore it has to be dealt with on a seat-by-seat basis,” Mr Kirkup said. “I'm not going to support any party or independent with extreme or outrageous views. The only party we’ve done a deal with is the National Party.” One Nation has two MPs in the Upper House, Colin Tincknell and Robin Scott. Founder and leader of One Nation, Pauline Hanson, has said she will not be visiting WA this election. She declined to be interviewed today In a statement released by One Nation WA leader Colin Tincknell tonight, he said his party had played a significant role in the WA Parliament. “If using our crossbench strength in Parliament to save the crayfishing industry, stop an increase in the gold tax, lobby for better palliative care, water security, farmers’ rights and better benefits for seniors is dancing with the devil, then I’m happy to wear that tag,” he said.
