Dancing and kava greets Australian politicians on first bipartisan trip to Pacific since 2019

A cup of kava, ceremonial dancing, gift exchanges, and friendly banter greeted a cross-party ministerial delegation led by Foreign Minister Penny Wong to Vanuatu. Senator Wong, Pacific Minister Pat Conroy, and their Opposition counterparts Simon Birmingham and Michael McCormack arrived in Port Vila on Monday in the first bipartisan trip to the Pacific region since 2019. The visit is a show of unity from Canberra at a time when China is trying to gain influence in the region, as well as reinforce Australia’s commitment to climate change and economic development. The delegation paid a courtesy call on President Nikenike Vurobaravu before being welcomed by a traditional dance and meeting with the local council of chiefs, which included the nation’s drink of kava. The quartet then held lengthy discussions with Vanuatu Foreign Minister Jotham Napat, while the country’s Prime Minister Ishmael Kalsakau was returning home from Europe. “With this bipartisan delegation I hope we demonstrate to you our desire for friendship, respect and that Australia wants that relationship regardless of whoever is in government,” Senator Wong told Australia’s neighbour. She then signed an Australia-Melanesian Spearhead Group memorandum of understanding on gender cooperation, before ending the day by attending a “made in Vanuatu” event, which included Vanuatu MPs as guests.
