The one common theme through fans’ reactions to crowd-less western derby announcement

VideoMark McGowan says Perth has avoided lockdown but fans will be shut out of western derby 52 after WA's latest COVID scares.

Western Australian footy fans overwhelmingly understand the decision to play this afternoon’s match in front of no fans - but there’s been one overriding common theme of anger in their response.

Premier Mark McGowan yesterday stated the footy would proceed in front of a 75 per cent capacity crowd, around the same time Optus Stadium posted the match would be crowd-less.

The stadium’s official Instagram page has since apologised for the ‘human error mistake’ in posting there would be no spectators.

However fans don’t seem to agree with the timing of the announcement, stating the Government and Stadium knew there would be no fans, and therefore should’ve given ticket-holders greater notice.

“Why not tell everyone yesterday? Optus stadium clearly knew,” one user asked, alongside screenshots of yesterday’s premature crowd announcement.

“You told everyone last night but yeah cheers bro,” another added.

“Mate - optus stadium knew last night....,” one claimed.

“Talk about last minute.”

Members and ticket-holders who had planned to attend this afternoon’s clash were left with little time to re-organise their plans, learning at 10:30am they wouldn’t be allowed to attend the 2:40pm match.

Social media users added their support for the decision amid three new community cases of COVID-19 yesterday, but couldn’t understand why it was communicated on such short notice.

“Disappointed but it's for the best. We'll be cheering from home!” one fan said with purple love heart emojis.

“Crowds cancelled @OptusStadium. There would be so much food potentially wasted .. I am sure they have a plan but @OzHarvest maybe there is something you can do?” another suggested.

“Almost like Optus Stadium knew last night ;)” one quipped.

“Absolutely the correct decision. Common sense rules,” another said.
