The nation’s best athletic stars will showcase their incredible skills in Perth next year when the 2022 Australian Track and Field Championships comes to the WA Athletics Stadium.

Set to be held in around April, the championships will be vital for athletes as they vie for spots at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games and the Oregon World Athletics and World Para Athletics Championships later that year.

Perth will also hold the championships three years later in 2025, with more than 1000 events to take place and more than 3500 athletes from across the Ocean region to descend on the city.

The WA Athletics Stadium was originally scheduled to host the 2021 and 2024 championships, but they were delayed because of COVID-19 and border restrictions.

“The Australian Track and Field Championships is the premier event on the Australian athletics calendar, and we know there an increasing demand for athletics across Western Australia, making it the perfect location to host next year’s Championships and again in 2025,” he said.

“We were disappointed not to be able to travel to Perth for the championships this year, however, we guarantee next year’s event will be as exciting as athletes aim for selection for both World Championships teams and Commonwealth Games.”

Commonwealth Games gold medal pole vaulter Kurtis Marschall said Perth had the best track in Australia.

“It’s very fast with usually good tailwinds for the sprinters and the pole vaulters and the jumpers,” he said.

“Hopefully it works out in everyone’s favour and I’m looking forward to going out there, using it and getting good marks for the upcoming events.”

West Australian Institute of Sport chief executive Steve Lawrence said it was a huge coup for athletics at all levels.

“It gives an opportunity for the top-level talent to perform their best and have a home ground advantage, but it also just gives an opportunity for the younger generation to see the stars in action,” he said.

“And give them something to aspire to given the first-hand experience.”
