Perth Heat coach Brooke Knight still feels his team has work to do to be in the ABL championship hunt this season but with two series wins already, he's looking to continue to build this weekend on the road to the Melbourne Aces.

The Heat have opened the 2019/20 ABL season with two 3-1 series victories firstly on the road to the Auckland Tuatara and then last weekend at home to the Canberra Cavalry leading into the Round 3 four-game series in Melbourne against the Aces.

Going 3-1 in the opening two series is a nice platform for Knight and the Heat to build upon. He would have taken the start to the season, but still feels the group has work to do to put themselves in the title hunt.

"It's tough to get the job done and be on top for every game of a series, especially in the sport of baseball," Knight said.

"But if we can continue that form I don’t think we'll have anything to complain about even though we know it won't be easy. It's tough to keep taking three out of four games every week. I think we're ready to go but I still think we are figuring out who we are as a team.

"I don’t feel like we are necessarily clicking on all cylinders yet and we're still gelling with the imports getting to know the Aussies, and the Aussies getting to know the imports likewise for the coaching staff and the playing group.

"I don’t necessarily feel like we are at where I'd prefer we were in terms of the mindset and culture to win a championship, but it's my job to build that and hopefully we can figure that out."

VideoThe Perth Heat are looking to build on encouraging start to the ABL season.

The Heat's batting has been coming along relatively nicely over the opening eight games with 39 runs and 63 hits with Jordan Qsar leading the way with nine runs and 12 hits while Robbie Glendinning has eight runs and 10 hits including two home runs.

Tim Kennelly has also started the new season well with seven runs and eight hits but the batting is an area Knight is looking for further growth in.

"I would say we've been going middle of the road with our batting so far. They did start to fire up on Saturday at home which was good to see but I still think we've got a couple of guys who have the ability to do a lot better than they have done so far, and they are still adjusting a little bit," he said.

"I'd say our batting has been reasonable and we're not quite where we'd like to be up and down the whole line-up. But at the end of the day we have enough batsmen there where they don’t all have to be hot at once. We just hope that enough guys are swinging well enough."

The pitching is an area Knight couldn’t fault too much to start the season. Carlos Garcia has already been credited with two wins with Nick Veale, John Anderson, Dylan Unsworth, Conor Lourey and Blake Bivens one each.

"We've pitched really, really well. We obviously had the miss in Game 4 out there against Canberra, but before that it was more than you could possibly hope for," Knight said.

"Our starting pitching was really good, the back end of the bullpen was really good and we just had that trip up on Sunday where we didn’t pitch well in the middle at all.

"That caught up with us a bit but there's no excuse for us not being able to hold on to a 6-1 lead. We let that one slip away which was unfortunate, but overall the pitching has been very reliable especially our starting pitching."

Knight sees no reason to change much in terms of pitching this weekend against the Aces and it will be Unsworth, Anderson and Lourey starting the opening three games against a Melbourne team he knows will be tough to get on top of.

"For this weekend it's going to be similar with our pitching with Unsworth, Anderson, Lourey and then the fourth game is TBD. We'll see what we go with for Game 4 depending on how we use guys in the first three games and it could be Bivens, Hendrickson or a handful of guys on Sunday," Knight said.

"They look to be a well-rounded team. They've got some pop in the line-up and they definitely can swing it a bit. They have some good starting pitching as well as a strong bullpen. We're going to have to play well especially on the road and pitch well, try to claw out a few wins. It's not going to be an easy task."
